This study used a qualitative design applying grounded theory to explore the elements that affect the social and economic outcomes of low income level single mothers that have enrolled into and/or completed vocational education. Two aspects of qualitative research are noted and support the methodology of this study. Qualitative methods allow for more than one story to be created from the collected data and allows for concepts to be formed on the basis of the data analysis (Corbin & Strauss, 2008). Therefore, the use of a qualitative method for this study is appropriate.

This study uses the Self-Determination Theory as its theoretical framework. The perspective of the self-determination theory is that people tend to pursue goals that support or allow their need satisfaction (Deci & Ryan, 2000). The participants communicated a high level of intrinsic motivation in being successful in their course to facilitate an improvement in their living situations. This is achieved collectively, as a member of a family inside a tightly knit social network. This network provides the resources; material, social and emotional to facilitate the educational aspirations of participants.
