This dissertation argues that Jane Austen's novels present an ethics of crisis: characters must learn to act well by attending to the opportunities offered by moments of conflict or decision in their relationships. Since ethics and politics are unified in Austen's vision, attention to conflict in personal matters can be seen as directly relating to resisting the obscuring effects of political ideology. The introduction of the dissertation situates this argument within the existing body of Austen scholarship, especially that which considers Austen's politics and ethics. The second chapter considers how Pride and Prejudice explores the increasing divorce between manners and morality as well as the political implications of this, since the individual's ability to practice just judgment can be hindered. The third chapter analyzes how Emma can be seen as critiquing the nationalistic, ideological abstractions of Napoleonic Era propaganda by portraying particularly realistic yet explicitly English characters, ultimately seeking to ground English identity in virtuous relationships of mutual dependence. The fourth chapter presents a close reading of Mansfield Park, showing how Fanny must consider her relationships in order to understand how she must act, a task particularly difficult because of her dependent position. This chapter is situated in relation to changing ideas during Austen's period about gratitude and gift as they related to discussions about the moral effects of pursuing wealth. The final body chapter will consider how Austen participated in debates about education during her period, concluding that the test of a proper education is that it prepares one to act well within one's home and community. The conclusion will consider the question of why Austen writes, showing her as critiquing the ideological abstractions that failed to encourage attentiveness in citizens' everyday lives and relationships.
