Thesis (M.A.)--University of Nebraska at Omaha, 2015.
This study examined the relationship between secularization rates and state legislation in the United States. The sample consisted of 11 of the 50 states that make up the United States of America. Data were collected to determine whether changing secularization rates were related to changes in the proportion of laws regarding morality across an approximately 18-year period. The change in political affiliation within the states served as a key control variable. Results provide limited support for the proposition that as a secular population grows, so too does the proportion of "moral laws" passed by the state legislature. This may be a reactionary measure by the state government, attempting to reinforce the social cohesion that is weakened as an increasing secular population lessens its religious participation.
