This study examined the nature of mentoring and how branch members of a larger investment firm interact with both electronic and traditional mentoring systems. To address this study, the researcher juxtaposed both traditional face-to-face mentoring methods with newer electronic alternatives to analyze the most effective approach. As such, the following primary research question guided this study: What are the perceptions of traditional and e-mentoring from members of a financial services team who have experienced both forms of mentoring? To answer this question, the researcher conducted 10 formal interviews whereby the data was gathered and presented in a qualitative and exploratory manner. The ultimate goal was to find the most effective mentoring system, as it related to industries where clients need mentoring so that others may build on this study and draw their own respective conclusions and to ascertain which platform offered the most effective outcomes for leadership, management, employees, and client outcomes. As such, participant interviews yielded four main themes that were presented herein: mentor/mentee relationships, employee buy-in, organizational culture, and motivation. These themes were all integral to understanding how an electronic mentoring system could be perceived as a more effective approach. Thus, the basic foundation of human communication was not necessarily a preferred consideration precisely because human communication can be so complex. What electronic mentoring offers is the promise of a neutral mentor, who by design, takes into account only the ideals and tactics used for self-enrichment and enhancing the innate abilities to help each other.
