Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2016.
This study was conducted in response to the increasing phenomenon of organizations from various community sectors forming coalitions to address issues of community revitalization. It was also prompted by the current prevalence of discussions among community development practitioners and activists on the subject of collective impact and the factors that support its viability, a prominent one being leadership. Therefore, the specific purpose of this study was to explore, understand, and describe the components that combined to ensure effective leadership of collective-impact community development organizations. The grounded theory method was used to explore the leadership experiences of 27 leaders and participants representing 15 collective-impact multi-sectoral collaborations of community development organizations. The goal was to develop a theory of leadership effectiveness for these collaborative entities. The study found that 5 main themes were related to leadership effectiveness in these organizations: the type of leader(s), leadership styles, leadership structure, leadership strategies, and leadership context. These themes were integrated to arrive at a theory of leadership effectiveness in these entities.
