The experimental and control subjects of this study were 195 Taiwanese freshman recruited at Feng Chia University, Taichung, Taiwan, Department of Foreign Language enrolled in English Conversation. Experimental subjects were non-randomly assigned from the researcher's assigned classes, and who participated in 18 weeks of Bandurian treatment procedures of model-effecting. American narrative films were serialized for 30 minutes per week in the language lab listening component of the 2 hour per week course study. At the end of the experimental period of 18 weeks, randomly selected groups from the movie treated groups and two control groups were administered the Listening portion of a TOEFL exam.

It was hypothesized that: (1) There would be a difference in scores at the.05 level in subjects receiving movie-modeling treatment in contrast with those control subjects who received no treatment.

Simple mean frequency and t-test results indicated that subjects treated to model-effecting procedures and American movie-treatment had higher mean scores on the TOEFL exam than the subjects who received no treatment. The results also indicated that those treated to American films exhibited higher increased levels of motivation, demonstrated disinhibition, or reduction of affective language barriers typical to Chinese students, in contrast to those in control groups.
