Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 1993.
This dissertation examines the theories of T'ung-Kuang style poetry, which was arguably the most influential poetic style during the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. The definition of the style that Ch'en Yen (1856-1937) and Cheng Hsiao-hsu (1860-1938)--the first users of the term--had in mind had to do with moving beyond the limits of High T'ang poetry, and therefore the T'ung-Kuang style was immediately construed as a part of the Sung poetry movement. By way of interpreting the Sung poetry tradition Ch'en Yen proposed the theory of three foundational periods, and applied the theory in analyzing the practices of contemporary poetic circles. In order to examine this theory, the present study will first review a number of important issues that have complicated our understanding of the so-called debates on the relative merits of T'ang poetry and Sung poetry. The next part of this study will demonstrate that Ch'en Yen's thoughts on the question of T'ang poetry versus Sung poetry were considerably comprehensive. The last chapter analyzes two very prominent issues in the critical discourse of the T'ung-Kuang school: the role of "learning" in poetry-making and the tendency toward individuation. These two issues will be discussed both in terms of their relationship with the poetic inheritance from the Sung poetry movement and in the historical and intellectual contexts of the late nineteenth century.Subjects--Topical Terms:
