As we move toward the 21st century, teachers all over the world should serve as living examples of the globally concerned citizens they are attempting to produce. Researchers (e.g., Gilliom, 1992; Wilson, 1993b) have found that international/cross-cultural experiences improve teachers' understanding and motivation for teaching about the world.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Research on the relationship between teachers' international/cross-cultural experiences and their teaching of social studies in Taiwan is still at an exploratory stage. The purpose of this in-depth case study was to investigate whether a Taiwanese elementary school teacher with international/cross-cultural experiences taught eight fifth-grade social studies classes from a global perspective.

Using a qualitative approach, the participant was selected for three major reasons: (1) she had been sharing her international/cross-cultural experiences with students for years, (2) she was able to articulate her point of view, and (3) she was willing to participate in this study. Data for the study were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and curriculum documents.

The findings show that the participant believes it is imperative to promote her students' global perspectives. She has developed her practical theories of teaching global perspectives. These theories include: (1) The intermediate-grade is the appropriate stage for learning about the world. (2) International/cross-cultural experiences can be infused into every subject. (3) The most recent experiences are shared with students immediately. (4) Teaching resources relate to the length of stay in places visited. (5) Parents' guidance is crucial in overseas travels.

As a social studies departmental teacher, the participant didn't just teach the unified textbook. She infused her international/cross-cultural experiences into the social studies curriculum. The participant's major goals for teaching of social studies include: (1) Preparing students for junior high school learning, (2) Having students make connections across time and space, (3) Studying diverse cultures and developing respect for each other, (4) Using major global issues to learn about the interdependent world, (5) Broadening students' horizons, (6) Emphasizing reflective thinking and relevance to students' lives. Five constraints hinder her teaching global perspectives: (1) Students' learning influenced by the joint entrance exam, (2) An overload of teaching, (3) Too many students in one class, (4) Lack of social studies teaching aids, (5) The need for more knowledge of global issues.
