Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1993.
This dissertation explores the phenomena of code-switching (CS) between Mandarin and English in Hawaii with regard to the following three objectives: to test previous linguistic and functional generalizations, to investigate bilingual language use and the attitudes of users toward CS and, finally, to determine what the discrepancies are between actual and self-reported data.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The main subjects of this study include both Chinese and English bilingual students studying at the University of Hawaii and the CS data were collected in Hawaii from January to June, 1990. The data collection methods include observation, audio-recordings, interviews and questionnaire survey. The audio-recorded data have been collected from three settings: a friendship setting, religious setting and classroom setting. The psychological, structural, functional, attitudinal, ethnographic and communicative approaches described in CS literature were selectively combined to analyze the CS data.

The results of the structural analysis have shown that the equivalence constraint and the free morpheme constraint do not seem to be as universal as they have been claimed to be. Variables such as the native language of the bilingual speakers and the base language of the discourse have to be taken into consideration when evaluating these two constraints.

The functional categories of the content units and functional units also differ from setting to setting. According to the present analysis, the differences resulted from the different interactional patterns of each setting and the relationships of the interlocutors in each event. The comparison of the questionnaires and the actual data showed interesting results as to how one's native language has an effect on the evaluation, correction and, therefore, production of code-switched utterances.

CS is such a complex phenomenon that different studies may focus on different aspects of CS. It is difficult to do cross-comparison among studies which have different focuses and results. A preliminary variable-oriented model was designed to help in the comparison of CS studies. The variables described in the model can serve as guidelines to follow when doing research to help in the comparison of CS studies, thus enhancing our understanding of CS phenomena as a whole.
