Thesis (M.B.A.)--The College of St. Scholastica, 2016.
This project examines why and how the lifecycle of a pharmaceutical drug differs from most other commercially manufactured and distributed products. It began with a review of literature that analyzed articles about traditional product lifecycles and the strategies that are used in each phase of those cycles. It next examined resources specific to pharmaceutical manufacturing and the factors that differentiate that industry from others. A major finding was that pharmaceuticals spend a considerable part of their total lifetime in the research and development phase, adding significantly to costs and undesirable impacts on the public. Based on the information that emerged from the literature, the project concludes by recommending strategies that, if implemented, would result in pharmaceutical companies protecting their investment, experiencing long-term profits, and better serving the public need.
