Restoration of Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar in the Lake Ontario watershed represents a historical challenge for fisheries managers dating to the late 1800's. Strain-specific differences in survival and growth, as well as habitat suitability and accessibility, were evaluated in tributaries of central New York in 2014 and 2015. Fry of Lake Memphremagog and Sebago Lake strains were stocked within the Ontario Drumlins and Fish Creek regions, where summer and annual survival and growth were evaluated. Abiotic habitat parameters, as well as hydrologic and geomorphic characteristics of man-made structures, were evaluated at stocking sites and at the stream-catchment scale, respectively. Salmon survival was largely site-dependent in the Drumlins and stream-dependent in the Fish Creek region. The Lake Memphremagog strain exhibited faster growth, and when available, should be considered for future restoration efforts. The Drumlins tributaries provided relatively poor habitat conditions, yet greater salmon migration potential, compared to Fish Creek tributaries.
