Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
This thesis examines the current international profile of Australian art (including Indigenous, non-Indigenous, colonial, modern and contemporary art), particularly in the New York and London art markets. It reviews Australian art's domestic and international presence to evaluate why it is poorly represented on the international stage. Issues addressed include the need for a uniform definition of "Australian Art", the establishment, strength and status of the Australian art market, and how its local performance affects its international profile. It analyses Australia's arts infrastructure, including government bodies, policies, and arts education programs, their effectiveness in promoting Australian art locally and beyond, suggests necessary improvements, and considers structures adopted by other nations to promote their art abroad. In exploring Australian art's international perception and presence, particularly in New York and London, its limited profile is revealed. The importance of enhancing its profile is discussed, and strategies to improve recognition are proposed.
