Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 2016.
The financial and wealth gap between the wealthy and the poor is wide and has been growing for the past several decades. The gap is even wider between foreign-born and native-born households. The gap also exists in the use of financial market services. Immigrants are 12% more likely to be unbanked than native-born Americans. Previous studies have shown immigrants use alternatives financial services such as rotating, savings, and credit associations (ROSCAs) to pool capital for small businesses.

Using survey and interview data from four cities across the United States, this study investigated the following questions: i) Is the length of ROSCA participation associated with successful saving habit(s)? ii) Is there a relationship between saving in ROSCAs and asset-accumulation among ROSCAs participants? iii) What are the institutional elements of ROSCAs? The social capital theory and the institutional theory of savings framework guide the study.

Results from this study suggest that ROSCA participants use their ROSCA savings to acquire assets. Homeownership increased by 13.6% and small businesses increased by 27%. Funds were also invested in other large purchases such as car purchases, jewelries and investment in the country of origin in homes and businesses. The results of the logistics regression indicate there is a significant relationship between assets owned and savings in ROSCAs. Conclusions and implications for policy, practice, and research are discussed.
