Universities are increasingly relying on co-curricular programs such as business plan competitions, accelerators programs, and hackathons to inspire and support entrepreneurship in students. Yet, there is little academic work analyzing how these activities successfully support the development of aspiring entrepreneurs. My thesis is a qualitative study of different entrepreneurial programs in a university context, more specifically, a student business competition (SBC). It is developed in two papers, which use different theoretical perspectives and levels of analysis. In the first paper, I adopt a sensemaking approach to help reveal and understand some of the elements that are crucial in the development of aspiring entrepreneurs. I show that through their participation in an SBC, participants enacted practices (iteration, exploration, and collaboration). Their interactions with members of the entrepreneurial community provide participants with cues with which to make sense of both their venture and the meaning of entrepreneurship itself. In my second paper, I focus on the individual level and examine how student entrepreneurs develop a startup. This study applies a practice-based perspective to examine the practices and modes of knowing modes used by student entrepreneurs. I show how entrepreneurial knowing is enacted through four main practices: prototyping, thinking analogically, combining and connecting, and reflecting. I suggest that entrepreneurial knowing is a nonlinear, iterative and sometimes chaotic process that helps nascent entrepreneurs discover and understand the resources needed to develop a startup. To conclude, my thesis makes a contribution to the literature on entrepreneurial education and the literature on entrepreneurship by showing the importance of both reflection and practice in the development of student entrepreneurs. It also offers several recommendations for the design of extra-curricular programs supporting entrepreneurship.
