In this study I evaluate adult attachment style as one factor influencing satisfaction in arranged/Hasidic marriages. Previous research has shown that adult attachment styles are important for understanding marital satisfaction in romantic marriages. I hypothesized, however, that attachment style, although influential, may be less important for marital satisfaction in arranged marriages because expectations for marital intimacy are potentially different in arranged marriages versus romantic ones. Data were collected on 100 Orthodox married men and women in romantic marriages and 100 married men and women in arranged/Hasidic marriages in the New York Metropolitan area who responded to announcements on social media and community outreach. Participants consisted of two target groups, Hasidic Orthodox Jews residing in Brooklyn (specifically Borough Park and Williamsburg two Brooklyn neighborhoods with large Hasidic populations), Monroe New York, and Rockland County, who practice arranged marriages and a Jewish Orthodox population from the larger New York Metropolitan area who married based on romantic interests. The non-Hasidic population was recruited from Queens in New York; Monsey, New York; and Midwood in Brooklyn (many residents in these areas marry based on romantic interest). Data were examined utilizing the Experience in Close Relationships -- Revised Edition (ECR--R) to ascertain individuals' attachment styles, the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS) to indicate the quality of the marriage, and a modified Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR) to assess participants' expected intimacy levels. Results indicated that adult attachment style was significantly associated with marital satisfaction. Expectation for marital intimacy was found to mediate the association between attachment anxiety and marital satisfaction. The findings suggest that adult attachment style is an important factor influencing marital satisfaction and may be partially mediated by the level of expectation for marital intimacy. Keywords: relationship anxiety, relationship avoidance, adult attachment style, marital satisfaction, marital expectations, intimacy, arranged marriages, Hasidic Jews, orthodox Jews.
