Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2015.
The goal of this research was to generate a theoretical framework for study and discussion concerning how preschool children (ages three to four years old) experience and express theological ideas related to the story of Jesus and the children from Mk 10:13-16. The researcher used elements from the Contemplative Reflective Model of children's ministry, specifically the Godly Play storytelling method, wondering questions, and response time, to allow children to participate in theological play and responsive art activities. Results indicated children experience theological ideas based upon the influence of their parents and express theological ideas through pretending that Jesus is their playmate. The following theoretical propositions are offered.

First, Christian family lifestyle influenced the information young children used to build their play scenarios in the Godly Play sessions. Christian family lifestyle includes items such as the parents sent their child to a Christian school, read Bible stories to their child, said prayers with their child, and modeled Christian behavior at home for their child.

Second, three-and-four-year-old children theologically conceptualized Jesus as a playmate, friend, and peer who wants to play with them. In each Godly Play session, the participants acted out various play scenarios in which the participants played as though they were wooden child figures with whom the wooden Jesus figure played.
