Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
Exhibiting private collections allows museums to show significant works of art that are otherwise inaccessible due to price, subject matter, or rarity. When museum board members own the private collections displayed, however, potential conflicts of interest can arise. Theoretically, such conflicts are diametrically opposed to the fiduciary obligations of trusteeship. In reality, successful board management, informed by legal precedent, the American Association of Museums' guidelines, and individual museum's bylaws, can prevent, or at the very least mitigate, actual conflicts. This thesis will examine the ethics, economics, and cultural implications of private collection loans by museum trustees in an effort to demonstrate the public value of these controversial exhibitions.
