Thesis (M.S.)--Oklahoma State University, 2015.
Voice time onset (VOT) refers to the duration between the release of a stop consonant and the onset of voicing. Prior research indicates that VOT is influenced by age, sex, language, and dialectal differences. The findings of VOT with regards to sex differences have yielded equivocal results. Also, most of the previous studies have investigated the development of VOT across restricted age ranges. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the development of VOT across broader age groups as well as consider the influence of sex on VOT. The current study employed a cross-sectional design to investigate the development of VOT across the initial seven decades of life. This study recruited 140 healthy participants (70 males & 70 females) within the age range of 5-75 years. The participants were divided into seven groups based on their chronological age. Each group comprised of 20 participants. Each participant produced five CV tokens of each of the six consonant-vowel syllables (/pa/, /ba/, /ta/, /da/, /ka/, /ga/), which were recorded and analyzed through the Praat acoustic analysis software. Mixed model ANOVA was carried out to analyze the data. The results revealed that (1) females had longer VOT, (2) there was significant difference in VOT between 5-15, 26-35, 36-45, and 66-75 years participants and (3) there was difference in VOT between voice and voiceless stop consonants. The current study provides normative for development of VOT across the initial seven decades of life.
