The American education system is permeated by accountability models focusing on the academic performance of individual students, school districts, and states' education processes and procedures, but little or no consideration is given to the learning environment which surrounds the students (Thurlow, 2009). Accountability models responding to federal legislation and local education agencies' pressure to improve learning have led to many modifications of the educational growth models. The accountability systems used in Mississippi currently do not allot for factors outside the classroom that may impact the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) growth model. This study analyzed the correlation between academic success of selected Mississippi school districts and the "outside the classroom factors", such as free and reduced lunch percentages per district, graduation rate, district size, district setting, district type (determined by the population of the school district), and reported incidents of alleged child abuse (maltreatment) cases per county within selected Mississippi school districts.
