Thesis (D.Ed.)--Capella University, 2016.
The purpose of this action research study was to examine the ability of a formal professional development program to affect the quality of instructors' teaching skills. This study was conducted in conjunction with an agency-sponsored, workplace faculty development program. Eight instructors from the worksite volunteered to participate in individual and focus-group interviews. Qualitative methodology was used to develop a planned intervention activity and to evaluate the effectiveness of the course on the content of instructional courses and training operational programs. Qualitative data from interviews and field observations were collected to identify commonalities, differences, and barriers. As the data were coded and themed, new information was revealed that was not originally anticipated. Research findings supported professional development programs as venues to enhance instructors' workplace knowledge and skills. Although the study participants reported personal observations about their own learning experiences, they also identified limitations that inhibited larger program changes at the organizational level. The barriers could be attributed to the organization not being at the same level of readiness for change as the participants.
