Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 2016.
This dissertation explores the way art mediates emotional responses in the poetry of the medieval Icelanders and the Anglo-Saxons. Chapter one examines the skaldic poetry embedded within Njal's saga to explain why poetic diction is best suited for emotional expression. The subsequent chapter analyzes Snorri Sturluson's Edda along with other Old Norse grammatical treatises to explain how poetic diction can be used to allow saga characters to work through grief and sorrow, with a detailed analysis of the skaldic poetry of Egil's saga. Chapter three discusses the Old English riddles of the Exeter book and their relationship to certain elements of Old Norse poetic diction as well as how these poems permit explorations of wonder and religious awe. The dissertation concludes by assembling the qualities of Old Norse and Old English poetry into a systematic emotional and aesthetic theory, integrating the emotional model of attraction and repulsion into the aesthetic theory of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgment..
