The contribution of tourism to economic growth in Jamaica has been tremendous over the years. However, the perception of violence over the island can easily erode these economic gains and negatively affect economic growth, development, and crime. Business and hotel operators see crime as a significant impediment to investment. Research has shown that crime can hinder both domestic and foreign investment, negatively impact business development and social capital supports this observation. This paper seeks to explore the effects of violent crime on tourism development and to evaluate its effects on economic growth and development in Jamaica. There are growing bodies of literatures addressing the issue of tourism impact on growth and development. However, few studies explore the extent to which violence and crime affected tourism and economic development. This study examined the casual relationship between violent crime and tourism development and economic growth using the trend analysis with the ANOVA trend test in testing whether there is a relationship between the violent crimes and tourist arrivals in Jamaica using the annual data from 2003 thru 2012 period.
