Thesis (M.F.A.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2014.
This thesis will cover the science fiction narrative feature film titled The Rise Of The Robots. The Rise Of The Robots was written, directed, produced, co-edited and scored by Herbert Midgley. The focus of this thesis is how filmmaking is both a creative and collaborative process. During my studies I have been involved with films that have had collaboration and others that the director controlled all parts of filming. A film, good or bad, cannot be made by one person, it takes a village of creative individuals working together with one vision to make a coherent film. A filmmaker can choose to either control every aspect of the filming process or embrace collaboration from other creative artists to make their vision come true. In the science fiction film The Rise Of The Robots, collaboration was the method chosen.

Everything from writing the screenplay, through the preproduction phase, during principal photography, postproduction as well as the test screenings, all were influenced by many creative artists and individuals. Each of their inputs added to the collaboration that made the crafting of The Rise Of The Robots possible within the time constraints of a single year. Professional, feature length filmmaking is not a craft that can be well accomplished by one person and sold for market distribution because making films of marketable quality requires a very high measure of professional and talented crew with collaboration. This thesis will describe how the combined talents of many individuals were essential to the pre-production, production and post-production phases and ultimately, the completion of this technically proficient science fiction film. All within the confines of a single year, with a budget of under ten thousand dollars.
