Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 1987.
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of sound pressure level on the free throw shooting accuracy of experienced and nonexperienced basketball players. Extraversion was used as a covariate. While each of these variables has been studied in a variety of settings, no published field research was found involving all of these variables. Further, no studies were found involving sound pressure level and athletic performance. The design of this study was guided by two factors: first, the desire to examine sport performance in a realistic setting; and second, the necessity to develop and test theory.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Subjects were required to shoot 20 free throws under each of three sound pressure conditions: 57 dBA, 72 dBA, and 90 dBA. The 57 dBA sound level condition was the level of noise in the gym without taped crowd sound being played. In the 90 dBA sound pressure condition, conversation is possible within just a few inches, but impossible at greater distances. The sounds utilized in this study were prerecorded crowd noise void of music or distinguishable words.

The data were analyzed with a multivariate analysis of covariance with repeated measures. The results demonstrated that experienced subjects were significantly more accurate in free throw shooting than nonexperienced subjects (p < .001). There were no significant differences in free throw shooting accuracy across sound conditions, nor a significant interaction between experience and sound conditions. It was concluded that the level of experience rather than the level of sound pressure affects free throw shooting accuracy.
