Critical entrepreneurship scholars have demonstrated that entrepreneurship studies and entrepreneurship itself are gendered male, concluding that the discourse on womanhood conflicts with discourse on entrepreneurship. This finding was built upon to suggest that women entrepreneurs necessarily experience conflicts between their identity as women and their identity as entrepreneurs. However, so far, this claim has scarcely been tested in research. This study uses identity theory, gender identity theory, and scholarly literature on entrepreneurial women to address this gap by exploring the experiences of entrepreneurial women in Silicon Valley.

520 $a It was discovered that the identity and experiences of entrepreneurial women are shaped by the intersecting influences of three contexts -- micro (individual), meso (day-to-day life experiences), and macro (Silicon Valley as entrepreneurial ecosystem). Participants acted as agents engaging in meaning-making processes to make sense of and cope with experiences of success and challenge. Silicon Valley was portrayed as a male-gendered entrepreneurial ecosystem. Gendering was achieved through archetypes, discourse, and practices.
520 $a Participants described the challenges they face and the success strategies they have developed. Three main types of challenges were described - everyday challenges of entrepreneurship, raising capital, and building an entrepreneurial team. A fourth challenge emerged as the daily interaction with the gendered practices and norms of Silicon Valley as an entrepreneurial ecosystem. For some participants, bias was internalized and manifested as internalized sexism. Sensemaking processes included making attributions about the source of the experience (internal/external) and about the participants' ability to control or change it. The resulting attributions were used to assess and choose among available coping strategies. These strategies included problem solving and emotional coping. Support played a critical role in participants' coping. The term gender agency is used to describe strategic use of gender in coping behaviors.
520 $a Entrepreneurial mothers faced unique challenges. These challenges are a result of the intersecting socially structured and socially sanctioned roles of mother and entrepreneur. Entrepreneurial women of color also faced unique challenges reflecting the intersection of their gender identity and racial identities.
520 $a The findings from this study contribute to scholarly knowledge on entrepreneurial women as well as to practices that focus on supporting women in entrepreneurship. Suggestions for future research and for practice conclude this paper.
