From the composer-playwrights of the sixteenth century to the seventeenth-century writers who dedicated themselves to creating Spanish forms of musical theater, many early modern Spanish dramatists frequently inserted musical performance into their works. In fact, Spanish writers selected the specific songs to incorporate in their dramatic texts while Italian and English playwrights only indicated the presence of music and left the song choice to the performing theatrical company. Literary critics and musicologists alike have emphasized the frequent presence of songs in Spanish theater, often focusing on a single playwright, genre or musical form. In this dissertation, I offer a comprehensive look at the ways in which eight early modern playwrights, Pedro Calderon de la Barca, Miguel de Cervantes, Lucas Fernandez, Lope de Vega, Luis Quinones de Benavente, Diego Sanchez de Badajoz, Tirso de Molina, and Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor, integrated songs into minor theater, the comedia and the fiesta. I elucidate the role of musical performance in early modern Spanish theater by examining the performative components in the playtext in addition to the musical score and/or recordings of contemporary theatrical performances, when available. My study is grounded in critical and theoretical research on performance, theatrical self-referentiality, intertextuality and musical philosophy to highlight the relationship between text and performance, music and drama, and drama and reality. My interdisciplinary approach offers a more thorough examination of the character of musical performance in early modern Spain than has previously been undertaken, thereby bridging the gap between musicological and literary studies of music in early modern Spanish drama.
