Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2016.
Due to the increasing globalization of the art world, a rising number of artists from emerging art market nations are gaining significant international gallery representation in the West. This paper looks at prominent contemporary Chinese and Indian artists with blue-chip gallery representation, and the markets for their work. It includes consideration of significant events and factors that influence the development of contemporary art in each county, and the evolution of its artists. This paper includes case studies on two leading contemporary artists from each country: Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Xiaogang from China, and Subodh Gupta and Bharti Kher from India. These case studies look at the development of the artists' careers and markets both domestically and internationally. These are examined in conjunction to a survey of artists from these markets with varying forms of representation in the West.
