This paper discusses the politics, ethics and aesthetics surrounding the infamous prisoner photographs of the Khmer Rouge's S-21, an instrumental interrogation center of the regime during 1975-79, today's Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide. It focuses on The Texture of Memory work by Vietnamese-American artist Dinh Q. Le that deals with the S-21 photographs, within the context and time that such images being exhibited both internationally and locally, in 1997 and 2000 respectively. By drawing on contextual and visual analysis of Le's work, as well as theoretical frames on images and representation of atrocity, I argue that The Texture of Memory participates in our collective effort in confronting difficult history and facilitating collective memory through a mediated process and critical engagement. Le's work employs indirect representation and generative strategy to mitigate horror effect and open up for a sensory experience that aid understanding of textured, intertwined memory traces of the genocide.
