Thesis (M.F.A.)--Mississippi College, 2015.
The purpose of this research is to gain a better knowledge of oil painting in Picturesque landscape imagery from the traditions of Romanticism and Luminism, and to add new painting techniques into my creations. I examined aspects of the history and development of oil painting techniques which were being used in Picturesque imagery in these periods. I investigated four artists from these periods, Sanford R. Gifford, John Constable, J. M. W. Turner and Gustave Courbet, in terms of an examination of their personal histories and selected works, and their technical approaches. I researched brushstrokes, textures and tools used, and how these four artists in the Romantic and Luminist periods incorporated these techniques and tools. The techniques used by these four artists have been influential in the studio work I accomplished for this thesis. I discussed in detail six paintings that I created based on this research. This study and my creations will provide information about these ideas, and brush and knife painting techniques. It will help artists to expand their ideas and toolboxes for painting, which in turn may lead them to greater success. I show in my own paintings the successful results of my research and creative efforts.
