This dissertation considers the effect of the global financial crisis of 2008 on theatrical production in the Republic of Ireland, using contemporary productions to explore the political and personal ramifications of the crisis through performance. I utilize theories and methods from theatre, literary studies, economics, sociology and performance studies to consider the ways that artistic expression and economic realities intersect during a time of austerity. This project incorporates dramatic literature created in Ireland and/or by Irish artists from 2008 to 2016.

520 $a The debt crisis that began in late 2008 was more than a financial disaster. The effects radiated out from the banking sector, to the Irish financial world, to the government and finally (but perhaps not inevitably) to the Irish citizenry. While this has often been written as a financial narrative, my work explores how playwrights and theatre artists across Ireland created important records of and responses to the crisis through art. In particular, I explore how Irish theatre since the crisis has responded to these new and dire changes to Irish life, and how the crisis is continuing to shape dramatic production in the Republic. The Irish debt crisis caused significant change to fundamental aspects of Irish society, and for many Irish people the effects have been traumatic and life changing. I examine the ways in which artists, activists and community members responded to these changes through theatrical and performative means.
