Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
Academic exploration of the theory of flow is virtually non-existent within classical Asian combative systems such as martial arts. This study addresses this gap by examining the independent and combined effects of head coach role tenure and organizational rank on athlete flow state levels and performance outcomes. A total of 23 head coaches and 159 athletes from 81 clubs across five continents and 28 countries completed a multi-section, self-report instrument. MANOVA analyses reveals that head coach (top leader) role experience (tenure) alone has no significant influence on organizational outcomes. However, top leaders' social rank and the combined covarying effects of tenure and rank do have a significant, positive impact on organizational outcomes. In addition to the quantitative analysis, a theoretical framework is developed for qualitative analysis using data collected from interviews with nine head coaches of varying levels of rank and tenure. The themes of absorption and precision emerge using content analysis. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed methods design for triangulation, the results of both phases are visually aggregated, in support of the findings. Overall, these findings suggest that iterative self-development programs can increase top leader capacity to motivate productivity outcomes and promote optimal satisfaction levels. This study advances an apex authority framework that can be applied in future research to explore the effects of top leaders on organizational outcomes. The contributions of this thesis have implications for interventions across sports, civil service, corporate communications, and training domains as well as for the future of multicultural leadership around the world.
