The needs of gender diverse children and their parents was examined through a review of the current literature and consultations with experts in the field. To help ensure positive psychological outcomes for gender diverse children, it is important that parents provide support and affirm their child's gender expression. This often requires parents to work through their own biases, discomfort, confusion, and grief about their child's non-conforming gender identity. Helping parents through this process is the main focus of clinical practice for mental health professionals who work with gender diverse children and their families. A common clinical approach is to work directly with parents, without the child being present, to work through parental barriers, foster affirmation of the child, and support parents in becoming advocates for their child. This clinical dissertation discusses issues involved in the provision of mental health services for this population, identifies area of knowledge gap, and provides directions for future studies.
