Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2017.
Emotional communication is defined as non-verbal, non-symbolic communication that generally takes place outside of conscious awareness, but nevertheless, may contribute significantly toward communication. The concept of status, as used and understood in the field of the performing arts, is a means of, describing, inducing, and controlling emotional communication. This dissertation suggests that psychological understanding of emotional communication represents the same behaviors that generate changes in status. The purpose of this dissertation is to test the association between the concepts of emotional communication with the concept of status. This was accomplished by devising a categorical variable of change in status and then testing the significance of the association of DeltaS with a variable of the activation of emotional facial expression, which was derived from the FACS. Participants were video recorded with the simple but effective procedure that aimed to record authentic emotional communication under controlled experimental conditions. A significant association between the participants' change in status and the activation of emotional, facial expressions was found that suggested that DeltaS is a reliable and valid measure of emotional communication. The data also suggested that changes in status occurred after the activation of emotional, facial expression, supporting the Cannon side of the James and Cannon debate. In addition, a pattern of cognitive and emotional facial expressions could be observed in the video data collected throughout this directed expression method.
