American Protestant Christians have been "mischief makers" in Palestine from the launching of their nineteenth century missionary efforts to convert the heathen Arabs, both Eastern Christians and Muslims, to their twenty-first century aspirations for political triumph on behalf of the modern nation state of Israel. From the late 19th century, different groups of American Christians shifted their theo-political perspective toward Jews and Arabs in Palestine based on emerging theological ideologies, political actions, and other considerations. However, contemporary scholarship has vastly oversimplified the historic attitude of American Christians toward the Jewish Zionist movement and the land of Palestine.

This study sheds light on several communities with American Protestantism and their diverse perspectives toward Israel, end times theology, missions to the Arab world, and the geopolitics of the region. Distinct historical events marked substantial changes in U.S. Protestant perspectives across the spectrum. These extend from conservative premillennial fundamentalists who supported restorationism as Christian Zionism during the late nineteenth century, to profound Protestant liberal support and political advocacy on behalf of the establishment of the State of Israel, to Protestant liberal advocates of social justice crying out in desperation in response to the Arab refugee crisis after the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine.
