This dissertation investigates the activities of the American missionaries, specifically the impact of the "Arabian Mission," on Kuwaiti society. A good understanding of the impact is achieved by studying Kuwaiti documents, interviews, personal memoirs, British documents, and missionary reports. The research focuses on the period from the establishment of the Arabian Mission in Kuwait in 1910 until they closed the station in 1967.

520 $a In 1890 a group of motivated students in the New Brunswick Seminary established a missionary organization called the Arabian Mission to evangelize the Muslim people of Arabia. They established stations in Basra, 'Amarah, Masqat, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The Arabian Mission's target was to spread Christianity in the "Cradle of Islam"---Arabia---among Muslims. The Arabian Mission used the Kuwait stations because of its geographic location as the gate to reaching the interior of Arabia. Their missionary method was to use philanthropic services to gain the hearts and minds of the Muslims. Therefore, their presence and especially their missionary methods affected the society in Kuwait. Also, they had a huge impact on the religious discourse, education, and health services of Kuwaiti society.
