Thesis (M.A.)--University of California, Irvine, 2013.
The Arab Spring brought with it a flurry of new questions about revolution theory. One of the most fascinating questions is why some regimes, despite dissatisfactory socio-economic conditions in their respective countries, were able to maintain power. In comparing the history of Egypt and Morocco since independence, one can see that a number of factors are important in answering this question including state structure, international context, legacy and ideology, and the history of reform efforts. Together these factors affect the legitimacy of the state directly influencing the likelihood of revolution.
