Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2017.
This executive position paper (EPP) proposes the implementation of a restorative practices program at Eagle Township School to decrease out-of-school suspensions and improve school climate for students in grades of 6th to 8th. An analysis of school culture and climate survey data from state year-end reports provides insight regarding the need for such a program. Recommendations for policy changes are based on current literature about the negative impact of zero tolerance practices and research-based alternatives to punitive discipline policies. Policy recommendations include: 1) Develop the restorative practices program for students in grades 6th to 8th using the components of affective statements, affective questions, circles, and conferences; 2) Implement the restorative practices program in grades 6th to 8th; and 3) Evaluate the impact of the restorative practices program on out-of-school suspensions and school climate with an eye towards continually modifying program goals, objectives and practices.
