Thesis (M.A.Sc.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 2008.
Bench-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the treatability of 24 EDCs and PhACs by a combination of powdered activated carbon and ultrafiltration (PAC+UF) at carbon dosages of 1 and 5 mg/L. Experiments were conducted with natural organic matter (NOM) free water as well as at 2 and 5 mg/L total organic carbon (TOC). The presence of NOM caused an increase in removal by the UF membrane alone for some compounds and a reduction in removal for others. PAC+UF provided a statistically significant (alpha = 0.05) improvement in removal when compared to UF alone for some compounds, but this increase was a function of PAC and NOM concentration. All compounds experienced a reduction in removal by PAC+UF in the presence of NOM when compared to removal by PAC+UF in NOM-free water, indicating competitive adsorption by NOM. The removal of neutral compounds was most strongly correlated to the log DOW pH 7, log KOW, and log of water solubility, while the removal of charged compounds was most strongly correlated to the polarizability, molecular weight, and molar volume, but only in the presence of NOM.
