Thesis (M.M.)--The University of Texas at San Antonio, 2015.
The purpose of this document was to explore a more in-depth study of selected pieces that were performed on my graduate conducting recital. The first chapter explores the choral music of Antonio Vivaldi and how the girls at the Ospedale della Pieta performed works that were composed for mixed chorus. Chapter two looks at the notational norms during the Renaissance period, and how it pertains to Tomas Luis de Victoria's Ave Maria. Chapter three compares two different settings of the Te Deum text composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Chapter four dissects five of Z. Randall Stroope's choral works, focusing on the compositional techniques he uses to create drama in a work. The final chapter provides a background of American folk music, and highlights how twentieth-century composer Gwyneth Walker uses all types of folk music in her choral works.
