It is important for people to strive to live a healthy lifestyle to gain both physical and mental health benefits. Although this may appear to be a simple concept, there is a growing rate of serious health problems in the United States. One way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is through exercise. Physical exercise enhances an individual's quality of life and decreases the health problems they may experience otherwise. One reason that an individual may not succeed in maintaining a healthy lifestyle is because they do not effectively address the psychological foundations of their unhealthy lifestyle. This issue raises the question as to what factors allow for the prediction of exercise training preference. Evaluating personality traits and self-efficacy that allow for the prediction of exercise training preference is the basis for this study. This descriptive non-experimental quantitative study employs a predictive approach to investigate whether the traits in the five factor model (FFM) and self-efficacy can predict exercise training preference. The data collected from the brief version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI-10) and the Physical Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (PESES) was analyzed using a binary logistic regression. This study confirmed that the personality traits in the FFM can predict exercise training preference. This study also supports the literature verifying that self-efficacy is an important factor in exercise behaviors. It is apparent from the results of this study that personality traits and self-efficacy are important factors when investigating health related behaviors.
