Thesis (M.A.)--Indiana University, 2015.
In this thesis, I will discuss the purpose, thoughts and literary theory of Erdenitogammataqu based on a detailed study of his writings from 1931 to 1945 under the Japanese rule in Inner Mongolia. Erdenitogammataqu lived in a time of great transformation and revolution when many different ideas about Inner Mongolia's future among the Mongols competed for support. Thus my aim is to try to answer the following questions: What was his ideal for the Mongols? How does literature help Mongols to achieve this ideal? More specifically, I will discuss his works from 1931-1945, aiming to understand his ideas and hopes for the future of the Mongol during the Japanese rule in Inner Mongolia. In the first chapter, I will introduce the historical situation in Inner Mongolia from 1931-1945. At the same time, I will also give a brief account of the life and career of Erdenitogammataqu during this period. The second chapter will be dedicated to other Modern Mongolian authors' literature contemporary with Erdenitogammataqu for a comparative study of their writings. In the third chapter, I will analyze Erdenitogammataqu's literature in detail with a special emphasis on the literary theory, thoughts, and purpose to reveal his hopes and ideas for the future Mongols of that time. Moreover, I will find out how literature help the Mongols achieve these ideals. In conclusion, based on my study I will make a short summary for the whole paper and mainly discuss how the young Mongol intellectuals differed in their ideas and hopes for the future Mongols and what Erdenitogammataqu's position and standpoint was.
