Thesis (M.A.)--Saybrook University, 2016.
This thesis presents the theoretical and practical foundations of outdoor rites of passage initiatives, and demonstrates the potential implications for positive youth and community engagement. First, an overview of traditional rites of passage methodologies, and their evolutions over time, is presented. The process of healthy adolescent development is then outlined, with specific emphasis on the stage of emerging adulthood. The contributions to positive youth development through rites of passage initiatives are then demonstrated. In order to understand why such initiatives are not more commonly practiced, the specific challenges in contemporary outdoor youth engagement programs are explored, highlighting the specific system obstacles they face. In the final stage of the literature review, various components of a community-based outdoor rites of passage model are presented, drawing on existing literature and effective programming in the field. In conclusion, future research on the relationship of such initiatives to asset-building communities is proposed.
