Thesis (Ph.D.)--Union Theological Seminary, 2016.
This dissertation explores the contemporary role of religion in the struggle to end poverty through a comparative theological analysis of two distinct communities engaged in anti-poverty work: the Poverty Initiative, which is based in the US and is influenced primarily by the Christian tradition, and the Sufi Tijaniyya community, which is based in Kiota, Niger and is strongly influenced by the Islamic Sufi tradition of Tijaniyya. Following the methodology of Comparative Theology, this research makes an in depth analysis of the religious other (the Tijaniyya of Kiota) from the perspective of a "home" tradition (the Poverty Initiative and a Christian Liberationist perspective). The intention of this comparison is to deepen and challenge the self-understanding of this "home" tradition. Unlike many Comparative Theological studies, this research project does not focus on an analysis and comparison of religious texts, but rather on identifying, analyzing, and comparing the liberative praxis of religion, or spirituality, that guides and is discovered through the anti-poverty struggle in each community. In this way it contributes to a liberative form of Comparative Theology, which is grounded in the specific history, conditions, and forms of organization of each community, and is accountable to these communities' aspiration for liberation. This dissertation concludes with a reflection on the key insights and challenges that the spiritual leadership of and devotion to the Sheikhs in Kiota and the spiritual practice of zikkiri present to the PI community and their struggle to end poverty.
