Often, senior leadership needs to communicate important strategic messages to all employees through multiple layers of an organization. Organizational performance should be enhanced by effective communication from senior leadership down through multiple layers of an organization, but often poor communication hinders performance. This study focused on larger, more complex organizations that need to transmit important information such as strategy and major changes.

This study sought to identify methods of communication and technology used to convey important messages in large organizations and make recommendations for improving communication through multiple organizational layers. Questions examined were: Does the type of organization affect the effectiveness of communication strategies? How do people at different levels of an organization perceive effectiveness of strategic corporate communication? What communications media are used for different communication tasks in an organization?

A survey based on the task-technology fit (TTF) model was used in this research since a technology (or communication media) will be used if it is "a good fit with the task it supports" (Goodhue & Thompson, 1995, p. 213). Survey responses from 852 professionals were evaluated to measure the perceived effectiveness of technologies and media for communicating important information. Results show that organization structure directly affects communication effectiveness and that organizations selectively apply communications media depending upon the communication task.
