Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2015.
This paper examines a collaborative film of Jean-Luc Godard and Gerard Fromanger, FILM-TRACK No.1968, Le Rouge, as part of the "afterlives" of May '68. The film was made as an activist artwork, dedicated to supporting the ongoing protest. However, its artistic approach to making an efficient agitprop differs from other contemporary art practices. This paper argues that the film's unique position and features provide us with a sense of the complexity of the moment in which it was made, the moment when its makers must have had the dawning recognition that the revolution would not succeed. By analyzing its title scene, end credits, and the bleeding French flag image of the film, this paper determines why Godard remade Fromanger's bleeding French flag to produce a revolutionary film in the wake of the May events.
