Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2016.
The seductive, pleasurable, and desirable qualities of beauty have made it a contentious, often repressed or controlled, concept throughout Art History. The much lauded return of beauty in contemporary art discourse during the 1990's brought beauty back into critical focus as an artistic strategy worthy of exploration. The philosophical, theoretical complexity and highly influential history of beauty has often prevented analysis of how beauty has evolved to address contemporary concerns, anxieties, and methods of engagement. In an effort to move beyond the application of nostalgic definitions of beauty, this thesis examines beauty in light of its past, present, and future potential. Through the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, Mat Collishaw, Marc Quinn, and Teresa Margolles this thesis explores how beauty functions as a strategy for contemporary artists, and what beauty can mean for art being produced in the current period. The relationship between beauty, politics, technology, perfection, and abjection will be analyzed to develop a nuanced understanding of the definition and viability of beauty as an artistic strategy and powerful mode of viewer engagement.
