This study examined affirmative admissions litigation from 1978--2002. The purpose of this study was to examine the different voices that encompass the affirmative admissions debate and analyze how these voices mold the affirmative action debate at large. The research was also developed to bridge the gap between traditional academic and legal scholarship regarding affirmative admissions and highlight the various issues that evolved as a consequence of reverse discrimination litigation.

Two research methodologies were implemented to conduct the study---historical analysis and document analysis. In utilizing historical analysis the author was able to examine six affirmative admissions cases. This allowed the researcher to analyze and identify how the Courts responded to each reverse discrimination claim brought by undergraduate and professional university applicants. Historical analysis allowed the researcher to scrutinize how the affirmative admissions debated evolved over a period of time. Document analysis was the second research methodology implemented. Case holdings, case transcripts, interview transcripts, amicus briefs, expert testimony, and pro/con affirmative action group judicial response reports served as primary sources for the document analysis. Document analysis provided the tool to extract the central points of the different voices that comprise the debate.
