This study explored elderly individuals' perspectives, thoughts, concerns, and candid feelings about the use of iPads and how the benefits of several iPad trainings increased their social skills. The study identified ways of learning how to operate, utilize the computer for services that benefitted the participants, recreation, increased their social skills and to help them remain self-sufficient. The use of digital technology and devices is becoming a necessary skill for mediating life in the 21st century. They have become ubiquitous and intrinsic in modern society and using them to interact with others requires specific skills and literacies to be learned by being trained. Participants in the study were residents living in a specific group of age-restricted communities comprised of people 62 years of age and older. Prospective participants were mailed requests to participate in the study and/or responded to advertising flyers. More than 58 homes received the invitations, 15 stakeholders were sought and 14 agreed to participate that met the criteria. The primary aim of this study was to introduce, engage and train 15 older adults in iPad usage; and evaluate whether or not the training was helpful in meeting their social needs. Nvivo software was used to analyze the data. Another objective was to investigate the impact of their age, cognition, self-sufficiency and technology experience on the ability of the elderly to perceive and use the iPad for this purpose. The results of this study indicate that the elderly in the study possessed basic functional technology literacies and usage. They acquired knowledge on how to use the Internet daily to bank online, pay bills online, send and receive emails, take personal photos, check the weather, social networking, directions, and medical information through the iPad training. The participants in the training sessions demonstrated how their participation in the iPad study helped to improve their social skills. The results of the study helped to form the foundation of an ongoing technology training program for residents within the agency.
