Kids clubs in professional sports have existed for many years. However there is little to no documented guidance on how to develop and operate a kids club in professional sports. This qualitative research study utilized in-depth interviews to uncover the framework for kids clubs operations in professional football. The research study was delimited to kids clubs in the National Football League because it provided similar subjects (sport, season length, league governance) that allowed for generalization of the results. This dissertation investigates: how NFL team's position kids clubs within the organization; the parameters and guidelines NFL teams have in place to operate kids clubs; and the organizational and/or business objectives for the kids club. This study establishes the framework for kids club operations in professional football. The interviews revealed the 12 themes that serve critical as characteristics to the operations of kids clubs: age range, membership enrollment options, programmatic elements, membership fees, membership kits, additional membership benefits, current and alumni player involvement, staffing, budget, sponsorship, placement within the organization, and the goals and objectives. The study concluded that kids clubs are a marketing tool for NFL teams to grow the numbers of the fan base, to provide a platform from which to engage the younger fan base, and to cultivate this younger fan base in to lifelong fans.
