This counseling master's project examines the transition from high school to college for those suffering from a mental illness and/or substance use disorder. The literature implies that current treatments provided are either too costly, take the person out of their current high school setting, or the person is not open to the idea of its use. Outpatient treatments are among the costliest, while medical interventions are shown to have the least compliance, even though they are shown to be effective when used. This project outlines a group that can be integrated into a student's senior year of high school in addition to a week-long wilderness experience. Both the group and wilderness experience provide opportunities for the members to self-reflect while increasing their self-efficacy.
